Hyacinth

Springtime heralds the rebirth of floral beauty and the first flowers to bloom are notably crocus and hyacinth. March 7th is designated as World Hyacinth Day. The classic garden variety Dutch Hyacinth has mythologic ties to a handsome Greek prince, who’s spilt blood was said to have been the origin of the flower. The hyacinth is native to the Eastern Mediterranean countries of Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Palestine. During the Victorian era hyacinths were said to symbolize a sporty or playful demeanor. Today the flower can be found growing throughout Europe, North America and Mexico. They are widely grown and cultivated commercially in the Netherlands and United Kingdom.

Originating from bulbs, the hyacinth blooms in multiple clusters along a stalk and their individual flower faces look like tiny starfish. The plant has ties to the asparagus family, but is not edible. It also has ties to the lily family. Plant extracts are sometimes used in facial beauty products.

These fragrant flowers bloom in vibrant hues of purplish blue and fuschia as well as pristine white. Blue hyacinths signify sincerity. They also come in orange, pink and yellow.

For any special occasion, hyacinths help to make especially beautiful decorative accents. For formal presentation, they can be placed in giant urns along with peonies, roses and greenery. For centerpieces they can be placed in fine porcelain bowls, pitchers or teacups. For an earthier look, place bulbs atop river rocks in a clear glass container or have them bloom from clay pots or moss filled baskets. Another container option would be to use galvanized pails or vintage watering cans. Hyacinth stands for “usefulness” and their unique color and shape gives them endless versatility. Consider pairing them with poppies, sweet peas, carnations, berries and geranium leaves alongside fruit for a stunning display.

The smaller sized grape hyacinth, also known as muscari, looks like a cone shaped miniature upside down bunch of grapes or a cluster of little bells. It makes a lovely addition to bridal bouquets when combined simply with a bunch of white tulips or red roses. A larger bouquet can be fashioned using anemone, peonies, hydrangea and greenery. A small sprig makes a particularly nice boutonniere along with fern or silver dollar eucalyptus.

Pair pastel pink tulips with blue hyacinths for a baby shower.

Create an elegant country garden aura by using any variety of hyacinth for your next Clifton Heights celebration.
